Faffing Friday Edition #16
Some hard news this week with a sprinkle of lighthearted faffing thrown in .. always 💗
What a flippin’ week.
Our house and back garden look like a crack den but news just in .. we now have a kitchen island. Yay!!! And the pantry cupboard got started yesterday. Woo hoo!!
The kitchen fitters have been hard at it this week and it’s starting to come together. It’s hard living around a big project like this. Never again we keep muttering to each other as we pass each other in various rooms. It’s actually true. We won’t ever be doing a kitchen/utility reno this big again. That’s it for us so it better be money well spent.
Most of my internet faffing has been searching, comparing prices and looking for discount codes for taps and light switches and sockets.
MISOGYNY ♀️ I’ve got to be honest much of my online reading this week has been about the horrific things men are doing to women and girls right now in the world. Is it getting worse do you think? There have been some excellent insights from writers right here on Substack that I urge you to read.
How many of us have read articles and listened to news reports in sheer disbelief this week about the trial of Dominique Pélicot for the heinous crimes against his now ex-wife, Gisele Pelicot?
is providing a gift link to the article on New York Times about the husband and 50 men who are on trial in France now for rapes committed over a 10 year period. How could a husband do that or even think to do it to his wife? It’s fucking scary. Off the scale scary. hit the nail right on the head with why aren’t more men talking about this?
And this sends a chill straight through you at how insightful
always is { have you read her book btw? } “Women have very little idea of how much men hate them.”A very personal story from
“Men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will kill them” - {Paywall}What do we do? Constantly check the men around us? Even the ones we think we know?
It seems a bit trite to include these links in something that is normally so lighthearted as my Faffing Friday posts but the subject matter is something that has played a big part of my week. I’m sure it has yours. They keep coming in, don’t they? These horror stories? Each one seemingly more chilling and horrific than the next. Stories that we seem to almost be normalising because why are we never really surprised that another women or girl has lost her life in the most violent of circumstances at the hands of a man?
TRENDS 📈 We must really be stuck for a trend because now we have high-end possessions artfully placed in grey plastic security trays that are apparently giving #foodstagram a run for its money. Voilà ‘airport tray aesthetic.’
ANOTHER TREND BUT TOO FUNNY 📈 Baked in Gold just dropped, daahling... another Greggs merch rollout - Baked in Gold collection available today!! Sense checked it’s Friday 13th not April Fools Day 🤣
22 carat gold sausage roll earrings anyone?
MOVIES 🍿 I’ll take Goth Winter over Brat Summer any day of the week. Coinciding with the release of the long awaited new Beetlejuice movie apparently ghoulish themes are set to take over our wardrobes. Mere mortals will have to shop at Primark, H&M and M&S to get the look.
I think I can pull off a good Morticia look too if I try .. I know it’s not the same movie but I love her 🖤
Did I tell you I take Fridays off? I co-founded my business just over 6.5 years ago and finally in January this year I thought right I’m doing this. I’m having Fridays off. Mostly, I’ve stuck to it unless we’ve had a deadline or a client needs something urgently. If you can’t have your own business and make your own rules then what’s the point?
Today I’m escaping the reno mess and meeting a friend at the gym. Afterwards we’re going for lunch into the beautiful village of Helmsley.
Helmsley is a Georgian market town in North Yorkshire about a 30 minute drive from me. It’s very picturesque. Not sure where we are eating yet. My friend has arranged that … at least I hope she has.
Ciao for this week, Faffers!
Hitting the Like 💗 button and re-stacking is the most massive help in getting the word out on Substack about my Faffing Friday posts.
ANNNNDDD you know by now how much I love conversations so the comments is good place to start a chat with me.
I have had a quiet news week after being in Majorca with no English TV channels in the hotel and a deliberate break from internet surfing in place of reading - bliss! I missed the Dominique Pelicot story but it sounds horrific - poor woman! Now there is the Jay Blades story - what is wrong with these men?!
Looking forward to seeing your completed kitchen! It will be worth the upheaval I am sure! x
Greggs have THE best marketing team. Everything they touch turns to gold!
