How To Look After Your Dry, Scaly, Winter Legs
A Survival Guide For Locking Moisture In + A Discount Code
I was inspired to share with you how I tackle my own dry, scaly, Winter legs after I received a really useful newsletter from one of my favourite independent skincare brands this week. More on that later.
To be honest I could scrub out Winter in the title and write ‘all year round’.
Thanks Menopause!
My whole body is definitely drier since going through Menopause. From the knees down over is always one of the biggest problem areas.
The indoor snow showers are real. When I take my trousers off of an evening sometimes I just can’t believe all the dry white flakes are off my body.
If I keep up my tried and tested regime I can generally keep it at bay.
But - and this is a BIG but, it can’t just be any old product I slather over them. Oh no.
Apart from the Menopause why else are our legs so dry in Winter?
Cold air outside- central heating inside. Hot showers. Changes in temperature as extreme as they are in Winter are all contributing factors to stripping our skin of its natural oils.
When this happens there is nothing to address replacing the lost moisture as our dead skins cells build up. The skin on our legs becomes drier and drier.
What is the answer?
I’ve got you covered. The simple solution is gentle exfoliation and intense hydration.
Here’s an excerpt from the newsletter from Desavery, the organic skincare brand I mentioned earlier. If you’ve been reading here for a while or following me on Instagram you will know how much I am a fangirl of everything this amazing organic skincare company has to offer.
Everything from Desavery quite simply just works for my skin. It’s important to find skincare that works on older skin. Not everything will despite the hype some products get. Often they are generally designed for younger skin but marketed to older skin. Insert ‘rolls eyes’ here.
Why Exfoliation is Essential
Dead skin cells act like a barrier. Light exfoliation removes this buildup, allowing your skin to better absorb hydration. But over-exfoliating can weaken your skin’s moisture barrier, making dryness even worse—so balance is key.
How to Dry Brush for Smoother Skin
Dry brushing is one of the best ways to exfoliate and boost circulation before you shower. Here’s how to do it:
Use a dry, natural-bristle brush on completely dry skin.
Start at your feet and brush upwards in long, firm strokes, always moving toward your heart.
Use light pressure on sensitive areas and firmer pressure on tougher spots like knees and heels. Brush for 2-5 minutes before hopping in the shower or bath.
Lock in Hydration
Right after your shower or bath, while your skin is still damp, massage in a body oil to seal in moisture and replenish your skin’s lipid barrier.
The Finishing Touch
Massage the Garrigue Body Oil with its mood-boosting botanical aromas gently into the skin using long upward strokes.
Doing it my way
I’ve had the body brush I use on my legs { and my arms incidentally} for years and it’s still going strong.
It’s this one - the Cactus Long Handle Brush from The Body Shop.
Once I’m in the shower I also use the Moroccan Rose Sugar Body Polish. Another firm favourite in my ‘dry skin begone’ regime. I love the feel of this rose infused exfoliator.
Then once out of the shower I’m back to the recommended step where I use the Desavery Garrigue Body Oil. There is absolutely no other body oil that comes close for me.
Oh the smell of it!!
I use it nearly every day especially at this time of year when leg descaling is at its necessary height. Not only is it replenishing much needed moisture but the smell never fails to give me a dopamine high. Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn .. I love it!!

I’ve just finished a bottle of it and when this happens before I’ve had chance to replenish, my fall back is the Ren Moroccan Rose Ultra Body Oil. You might remember I asked for restocks of the complete Morrocan Rose body collection on my Christmas list and Santa came through!
Yes, the full size Desavery Garrigue Oil is a bit spendy at £98 but it’s worth it. Using every other day or so, this 250ml size bottle you can see I’ve used has probably lasted about a year. I honestly don’t know how as I don’t stinge when applying. I suppose that’s another of it’s magical attributes .. how long it lasts. Cost per use and all that.
You can also buy a travel size for £49 that I also have for .. well … travelling.
As a treat for you I have a discount code that will get you 15% off sitewide at Desavery. I use their other products too and like I said, I rate everything very highly.
Use SHARON15 at checkout.
Free worldwide shipping, too on orders over £50.00 or $50.00 USD.
I’d love you to let me know if you do purchase and what you think of the products. I’d also love to know if you can better my recommendations. I’m always on high alert for dry skin saviours that work on older skin. They have to smell good too, though. Smell is everything for me. Dopamine highs 💗
For transparency I have received PR samples in the past from Desavery but ever since I tried them I am also a customer too … and my 82 year old mum!
With Love,
Thanks for the info. I just started dry brushing this week and hope it makes a difference on my very dry winter skin.
