Who decides when you’re ‘too old’ for something? Society? Your family? Your boss? A random stranger on the internet with an opinion? Or, be honest, have you started telling yourself that certain things are off-limits now?
I thought about this when I wore my new jeans at the weekend. Random, I know but stay with me.
I can remember hearing women say they were too old to wear jeans not too long ago.
YES ... JEANS!!
Along with short skirts, bikinis, bright colours, red lipstick ... yes the list is pretty endless.
It made me think about trying to imagine my gran at 62 wearing ankle grazer boyfriend jeans like I am in this photo just last weekend.
I don’t think I can ever remember her wearing trousers… ever.
Yet my 82 year old mum on the other hand wears what she wants. Well, mostly. She still has a mental list that includes not showing her upper arms.
Much has changed in a few decades. But maybe not enough 🤔 Maybe it’s ok to want more. Women have been held back for too long.
Maybe you still think you are too old to wear jeans or a short skirt or a bikini?
That voice in your head? The one whispering, Maybe I shouldn’t… or That’s for younger women…?
That voice is lying to you. We are limiting our own beliefs.
If there’s anything I’ve learned this year through my EFT training and studying it really is this.
I still really despair though, that we live in a society that worships youth and sidelines experience. One that pushes the idea that ageing means shrinking, fading and stepping aside. That after 50, 60, or (gasp) 70+, we’re supposed to tone it down, keep it safe and stick to ‘age-appropriate’ choices. I mean I could add 40 in their too as I see this as well.
But I’ve never been clearer in my belief that ageing isn’t an exit it’s an evolution.
Think about your thoughts and how you feel right now reading this.
Thinking that you’re ..
Too old to start a new business?
Too old to switch careers?
Women in their 50s and beyond are reinventing themselves every damn day.
Too old to wear what you want? Already ticked that box wearing what I please.
Too old to fall in love, go back to school, travel solo, or take up weightlifting? Who actually made these rules?
What if we stopped letting the world define what’s possible for us? What if we stopped letting ourselves believe it?
The only real question is: what do you want?
I really have come to believe that this phase of life isn’t about permission. That it’s about power. It’s about stepping fully into who you are, unfiltered, unapologetic and unwilling to accept society’s expiry dates.
It’s about making noise, taking up space and refusing to disappear.
So, the next time someone even if it’s yourself suggests you’re ‘too old’ for something, don’t explain, don’t justify.
Just do it.
Let them figure out how wrong they were.
I talked about this subject in my Tedx Talk if you want more …
Lots of love as always,
I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments, too 💗
I've never been a fashion plate but my first book of poetry will be published in October...a new career at age 70!
Brilliant post! I love living my life in as much colour as possible. Black is no longer an option. My (almost) 90 year old mother asked me the other day if a dress was too young for her and if her trousers were out of fashion? I had to take a breath - neither of those questions have crossed my mind in a lot of years! Wear clothes that bring you joy. Who cares what anyone else thinks!
