TGIF: What's got my attention this week #1
My first Friday roundup of things that have piqued my interest so might pique yours ...
Hello and welcome to my very first weekly round up of things that have caught my attention this week.
I can feel the anticipation building up as I start to head into my BIG birthday month. I’ll be 60 in just over 3 weeks .. eek!
I know that everyone else in the UK is more excited about a bumper month of bank holidays.
Here we go .. news curated by me especially for you.
Inclusive Barbies helping to "teach understanding and build a greater sense of empathy, leading to a more accepting world." Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when I see things like this.
It’s the year of celebrating the older writer. Woo hoo!! The Women’s Prize for Fiction shortlist has five authors on it who are over 50. Go girls!
I had to laugh when this popped up on my Instagram feed. Rock chick, Sharleen Spiteri, 55 has an unusual menopause therapy. The story is behind The Times paywall but basically it said she plays the drums and “I just put photographs of people’s faces on the drum kit and literally batter the living daylights out of it and feel fantastic.” 🥵
I went to see a Scary Movie at the weekend. Evil Dead Rise. Watch this clip if you dare. I loved the original released in 1981 but never watched the three that followed. This one I’ve gotta say was quite good. Very gory and soooooo much blood and I did really jump once much to the kidults amusement. I’ll give it a 7/10.
We need to make ageism in the workplace old news. I spend a lot of time on Linkedin for my business and I am connected to Cindy Gallop. She also writes on here as
. It’s really hard to believe that she wrote the linked article for The Guardian way back in 2016 and the problem of ageism is worse not better. Here’s her Linkedin post, too. Obviously turning 60 very soon the subject matter is pertinent to me. I’ll be sharing more about ageism here for sure. I think I’ll be like Cindy and have a birthday hashtag #sharonis60 #thisis60
Ageism is sometimes stuck on men, too. Very rarely and usually only if you are the Leader of the Free World. Should Joe Biden Run Again? Ageism Says No. Meritocracy Yes. This is written by someone else that I follow on Linkedin and whose words I really enjoy here on Substack,
Substack really is the place to be.
That’s it for this week, gang. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my very first Substack brain dump. Maybe I should call this newsletter on a Friday that? What do you think?
I’ll be setting up Chats on here next so that I can start growing a Community.
You can also still read all my archived posts over on my old blog platform.
Have a great weekend, Sharon x
Thanks massively for following me to Substack, Annette!
Love the new Barbies, great idea for inclusivity. The young girl with Down’s Syndrome is gorgeous. 😍
You would never get me watching a scary movie, I was done with them after Salem’s Lot! 😆
Like the new space! x
