SO so relate to this, Sharon, and loved reading about your experience with the detox - something I've tried, like you, altogether or just with specific apps (socials, socials, socials!)—I've come across, just recently, interesting stuff from brain health writers on the benefits to that of easing off and not being so tethered (Better Brain on substack, Dr Julia Frantoni talks about phone use and screen/online use a lot, too). I've also read the idea of taking weekends/one day off. Still trying to find a way forward- and I can well see how ADHD plays into the mix and makes this extra challenging. Keeping up here with all I want to read, too, for eg is hard - on Notes, all of it - we want to, it's so lovely to connect, but then wonder where the time's gone and we've lost the ops to do other things (like your book reading etc.). Sidenote: Barney Boo beach pic the CUTEST!!! XOXO
My name is Lisa and I'm an addict! Love this Sharon because, you're right, I think we are all a little obsessed with scrolling and if I don't have my phone nearbyt and almost all hours of the day, I do tend to panic a bit. That said, in the evenings I'm better - I watch TV and read rather than scroll but I make up for it during the day. Also, something I've noticed more and more recently is dogwalkers stopping in the park to check their phones while their dogs are jumping up or standing waiting for them to continue their walks - or for their owner to throw the ball! I hadn't noticed that until recently...then realised I have done that a few times much to Cosmo's dismay and so now I make my hour dogwalk every morning phone free! Little steps are the way forward I think...Well done you for doing 32 hours!xx
I've done that with Barney, too! It's crazy isn't it, Lisa?
If we just stop and think about it we are like what the heck are we doing? I'm on a mission to not let it rule me even thought my whole work life is tied to it 🤷♀️ x
I do try and leave my phone in the morning until I'm up, dressed, breakfast, a few chores done, etc. and ready for the day, Sharon - usually 9:30 or so... because I then don't respond to messages until after that time my family think I'm not up!! 🤦♀️
I have to admit I'd also struggle with a whole day's detox, there are always photos I want to take plus I literally have to keep my phone on me for emergencies for my elderly parents (I'm the nearest geographically to my parents so I'm the first mum calls). It makes it very hard to leave the apps alone, especially when the husband sends me millions of TikTok videos a day to watch! Well done you for doing it, that's actually very impressive 👏👏👏
I know, Catherine .. how it's been cunningly woven into everything we do hasn't it? We are the same in our family sharing cockerpoo/ reels and the kidults send me parenting skills 🤣
And the minute I read something I'm like oh now they'll be expecting me to reply 🙈
It's so powerful .. we are a human experiment for big tech! x
First thing I’ve read this morning, Sharon (in bed, on my phone) and food for thought! I remember being so scathing about smart phones when they were first introduced. So disruptive. Swore I’d never even have one. Now? Inseparable best mates. But yes, time to put it down and get on with the day!
They have seamlessly hooked us in, Wendy haven’t they? I’m like you .. my bed is an extension of my office! I’ve been trying to break that cycle of looking through everything for 10 mins before I get up. Some days I forget. Thanks for your insight 🙂
I feel like I’ve “caught up” if I read in bed, but have forgotten what it feels like to just use those minutes for actually getting up and starting everything a bit earlier! I feel an experiment coming on. Thank you for the nudge, Sharon!
